Newcomer & Immigrant Teacher Workshop Series

A Practical, Reflective Learning Series — Grounded in What Teachers Are Asking

If you’ve ever asked yourself…

  • How do I support my students when I know so many have experienced trauma?

  • How can I engage with students across a language divide—and help them access grade-level content while learning English?

  • What do I do when students seem disengaged? How can I build on what they already know and care about?

  • How do I connect meaningfully with families when we don’t share a language or cultural background?

  • How can I help newcomer students feel more confident and comfortable at school—academically and socially?

…this series is for you.

You don’t need to be a language expert or a mental health professional to make a big difference in your newcomer students’ lives. You just need the right tools, supportive community, and space to reflect on what’s working and what’s possible.

In this five-part series, you’ll build practical strategies to better support newly arrived students—while connecting with other educators navigating similar challenges.

Our workshops include hands-on, interactive sessions featuring real-time application: sample lesson plans, peer case discussions, and hands-on practice with tools you’ll take back to your classroom.

Workshop Series Overview

We know that supporting newcomers takes more than good intentions — it takes time, tools, and a space to learn with others.

  • Session 1 – Belonging: Strategies to build safety, trust, and belonging

  • Session 2 – Language: Leveraging students' home languages for deeper learning

  • Session 3 – Funds of Knowledge: Integrating community strengths into curriculum

  • Session 4 – Family Engagement: Partnering with families across language and culture differences

  • Session 5 - Student Confidence: Centering youth voice and leadership

Whether you’re just getting started or developing an existing program, we help district and school leaders take a more intentional approach — grounded in research and reflective of your local context. We help you build on what's already in place and align the many moving parts to strengthen a holistic system of supports.

We can help program leaders:

Program Strategy & Advising

You don’t have to reinvent the wheel — or rely on piecemeal fixes — to support your newcomer students.

  • Identify self-assessment tools for team reflection and growth.

  • Align newcomer supports with existing initiatives like community schools, MTSS, or family engagement — so efforts reinforce each other.

  • Integrate newcomer student and family voice into program planning and priorities.

  • Clarify your program’s vision and goals, grounded in research and promising practice.

  • Develop a phased roadmap for top priorities and further program development.

  • Create a focused PD calendar that meets staff where they are and builds capacity where it’s needed most.

So your efforts are fully integrated — not isolated — and provide newcomers with the holistic supports they need to thrive.
