Multicultural Citizenship Education as Resistance
In response to the anti-immigrant climate following the 2016 U.S. presidential election, teachers at a diverse middle school in California reimagined civic education as a form of resistance. This study explores how educators shifted their curriculum to affirm immigrant students’ cultural citizenship, foster critical consciousness, and encourage student-led political action. By embedding culturally responsive and justice-driven content into their teaching, these educators empowered students to engage as active, informed members of a democratic society.
