Fostering Translanguaging in Diverse Instructional Settings
As schools serve increasingly multilingual student populations, educators need instructional approaches that both accelerate English language development and honor students' full linguistic identities. This practical article explores how translanguaging moves beyond translation, providing students with meaningful opportunities to use all of their language resources to deepen understanding, strengthen academic learning, and foster a greater sense of belonging.
Drawing on current research and classroom experience, the authors share concrete translanguaging strategies for three instructional settings: general education classrooms, newcomer programs, and bilingual or dual language programs. The article also includes a practical planning framework to help educators intentionally integrate translanguaging into everyday instruction while maintaining high expectations for language development.
