Video Resource: From Policy to Practice: How Educators Can Create Safe and Inclusive Schools for Immigrant Students Coast to Coast

Immigrant students deserve schools that remain steady, protective spaces—even in uncertain policy climates.

In partnership with the CUNY Initiative on Immigration and Education, this national webinar explores how educators can respond to the current anti-immigrant climate with clarity, courage, and concrete action.

Grounded in the latest federal and state policy developments, the session examines what’s happening across the country, and what it means for schools. Participants learn about key policy areas including safe and protective school guidance, language access protections, and educator preparation requirements, with examples from New York and California.

Most importantly, this session bridges policy with practice. We share two core classroom practices—translanguaging pedagogy and teaching about migration—to help educators cultivate safety, belonging, empathy, and civic empowerment. The workshop also offers actionable strategies for district leaders, school leaders, and teachers to create environments where immigrant students and families feel protected, valued, and supported.
